Chlorine and Pharmaceutical Drugs
Chlorine in water combines with natural organic matter creating cancer-causing Trihalomethanes (THM's).
Recent water analysis's conducted in cities around the world have demonstrated that pharmaceutical drugs are present in municipal water supplies. According to CTV News, "Canadians' tap water may contain traces of prescription drugs".
Birth control pills, cancer drugs and a host of other pharmaceuticals are making their way into the water supply because the human body doesn't always absorb all the medication it ingests, and some are flushed down the drain, says Gord Miller, Ontario's environmental commissioner.
Chlorine in Water
- Chlorine in the drinking water is associated with triggering tumor development both in heart disease and cancer
- Research has shown the basic cause of heart disease, heart attacks and most common forms of strokes is from the chlorine contained in drinking water
- Studies from major cities reveal where there are higher levels of THM's there are higher levels of cancer.
- The skin is the largest organ in the body and chlorine is absorbed through skin during showering and bathing
Pharmaceutical Drugs
- Pharmaceutical drugs are in North America's lakes, rivers, streams, and tap water
- Some of the ways pharmaceutical drugs get into our water are:
- unused medications are flushed down the toilet or sink.
- Between 50% and 90% of the active ingredients in medications are not absorbed by our bodies – we excrete them into the sewage system. - Pharmaceuticals in waterways are damaging wildlife –in a CBC news report (dated Sept. 15, 2009) they report that male fish are being feminized in US streams.
- Water sewage and water treatment plants don't remove pharmaceuticals drugs from the water.
- a wide range of prescription and over-the-counter drugs have been tested from taps in municipal water systems-- including antidepressants, antibiotics, anticonvulsants, and sex hormones.
- CBC Research - Twenty-four of the 28 water samples taken from major metropolitan area water supplies contained evidence of drug contamination.
